Read MoreLearn when to value bet, bluff, call, check, or fold on the river using hand ranges, position, pot odds, bet sizing, and the completed board.
Begin by rebuilding the hand from pre-flop through the turn. Note who raised, which draws completed, which strong hands are still plausible, and whether the opponent's bet size is consistent with value, a bluff, or both. Position remains important: acting last lets you see whether an opponent checks or bets before committing more chips.
For a call, compare the amount you must pay with the pot you can win. If the pot is 100 and an opponent bets 50, you call 50 to compete for a final pot of 200, so you need to win more than 25% of the time before rake. Because there is no card to come after the river, drawing odds and implied odds from future streets no longer apply.
For a bet, decide whether worse hands can call or better hands can fold. A value bet needs enough calls from weaker hands; a bluff needs enough folds from stronger hands. Avoid betting merely because your hand was strong on an earlier street. The completed board may have changed both your hand's relative strength and the opponent's credible range.
Use the best five cards available and check whether the river completed a straight, flush, full house, or a shared board hand. Do not count six or seven cards, and do not assume both hole cards must play.
Use position, previous actions, board texture, and bet sizing to list realistic value hands and missed draws. A sudden large bet is evidence to assess, not automatic proof of either strength or weakness.
Bet when enough worse hands can call, bluff when enough better hands can fold, call when your required equity is supported by the opponent's range, and fold when the price is too high. Checking is often best when a bet would be called mainly by better hands.
After the hand, compare your range assumptions and pot-odds calculation with the information available at the time. One winning call can still be poor, and one losing fold or bluff can still be logically sound.
Review the river definition first, then practice assigning ranges and calculating the price of a call before looking at the result.
